It's Muscat Season!
Yesterday, we had the pleasure of hosting the kickoff to our special luncheon series debuting the much anticipated Muscat 2015! Jean-Georges at Topping Rose House in Bridgehampton, NY was the ideal setting on a gorgeous summer day. Intimate with rustic charm, it fully complemented the Patricius aesthetic; nearly the same feeling you get, being at the winery.
Although the focus was indeed the Muscat, we began the lunch with a rather unconventional pairing. We selected a spicy, salty Corn and Jalapeño Fritter with our Late Harvest Katinka! Typically considered a dessert wine, Kantika is versatile in pairing with savory foods. The bright acidity balances a very high sugar level, keeping the mouth feel light and fresh.
Next the Furmint was paired alongside a Tuna Tartare and Pea Soup. Often served with game meats in Hungary, the Furmint holds up to earthy herbs and spices in dishes. Aside from being used in the production of Aszú, the Furmint variety is a popular table wine, so much so, that it is the most widely planted white grape in Hungary.
For the main course we let the star of the Muscat shine bright, alongside Seared Salmon Salad with Carrot Dressing and Beef Tenderloin with a Miso-Mustard Sauce and Charred Onions. The Muscat enhanced the savory, sweet flavor profiles of the dishes, with a boost of floral aromatics.
En fin, exquisite local cheeses were served alongside the 5 Puttonyos Aszu 2004. Rich blue cheese is a wonderful morsel to be enjoyed with the "Wine of Kings, King of Wines," that the region of Tokaj is known for. Apricot, orange peel, tropical fruits and pistachio notes burst in unison to give a seemingly rich wine a light quality.
That wasn't all! We left the best for last. Eszencia is something one rarely gets to experience, if ever. The 2000 vintage was opened and met with a loss for words. We'll take the "ooo's" and "aah's" as a solid testimonial.
Next, we are excited to continue our luncheon series at Blaue Gans in New York City's Meatpacking district, paying homage to that Austro-Hungarian influence, and then at one of New Jersey's top fine dining destinations, Jockey Hollow Bar & Kitchen in Morristown.
